Just like Pisa is more than one crooked tower, Amsterdam is more than its drug culture. Having said that, whether you're marijuana-curious or know how to make a bong out of most household objects, Amsterdam is most certainly the place for you. (And once you've indulged, you'll see what a marvelous idea the local speciality of french fries and mayonnaise is).
Artistic types can spend the day hopping from one beautiful museum to another, taking in masterful works by Dutchmen Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh. Everyone should step inside the house which sheltered Anne Frank and her family for 2 years and wonder if you could have survived with your family in 500 square feet for even 2 weeks. Also worth visiting, in a similar vein is Museum Amstelkring, a lavish church built in the 17th century, hidden within an ordinary house so Catholics would have a place to worship when the Protestants took over.
Or, if you hate drugs, art, incredible hidden churches and solemn Holocaust immersion, visit Amsterdam for the simple pleasure of getting lost riding a bike through a city where the only hills are beautiful bridges overlooking picturesque canals.
