How many times have you been singing along to "Do-Re-Mi" from "The Sound of Music," and when you get to the lyric, "sew, a needle pulling thread," you feel a deep regret that you don't know how to sew? It's never too late to learn how, and you never know when you might need to do it. Perhaps you'll tear your shirt off in a moment of unbridled passion but can't afford another one, so you have to sew all the buttons back on. Or perhaps you want to be even one-tenth as cool as the doctor who got wounded in a shark attack but stitched his own wounds and then went to the pub like it was no big deal:

So, how can you learn? If you feel the need for your very own sewing instructor, search for one in your area:

More group-oriented? Try the American Sewing Guild, dedicated to promoting sewing as a fun life skill. It is not clear if there are secret handshakes and/or stitches involved:

If by stitching you mostly mean knitting, and by knitting you mostly mean chatting with a possibility of knitting, then try your local chapter of Stitch 'n Bitch:

Or if you shun human contact, you can learn to sew at this handy site:

Before you know it, the next time those Von Trapps are singing about sewing, you'll breathe a sigh of relief and be able to say, "Oh, I wonder if they'll be using a rampart or slant overedge stitch!"
