The Dead Sea is steeped in history, rich in natural beauty, and has been touted as a therapeutic vacation spot for centuries. It was one of the first known health spas in the world, and a refuge for King David and Herod the Great. Bordering Israel to the west and Jordan to the east, the sea is nearly ten times as saline as the ocean, making it one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. Because of its unique properties, the Dead Sea has become an important destination for health treatments and research. Even the air here has documented health benefits.
The fun starts upon immersing yourself in the milky-white, therapeutic water, and finding that you float quite effortlessly. Just make sure you don’t get any in your eyes… Unless you’re in the mood for some crying therapy.
Get there while you can, because the Dead Sea is disappearing at an alarming rate. Due to diversion of the Jordan River for irrigation, and the industrial application of the rich waters in the creation of potash, the Dead Sea is losing nearly 5’ of water every year. If nothing is done, some estimate that the Dead Sea will itself be dead within the next 40 or so years.
The Dead Sea is an easy day trip from major cities in Israel including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Eilat. On the Jordanian side, a day trip is possible from Amman or Aqaba. Taxis and public busses frequent the area, but a rental car will allow you to explore the sea at a more leisurely pace. The southern part of the sea has the highest concentration of minerals and is home to an abundance of health resorts, spas, and treatment centers.
Route 1, east from Jerusalem, and route 90, along the northern coastline, are areas of rugged beauty, with pristine beaches and picturesque desert landscapes. There are many sites of historical and religious importance here, including the Qumran Caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, and Qasr al-Yahud, where Jesus was baptised and began his spiritual journey. Spoiler alert, it didn’t end that well for him.
A trip to the Dead Sea can revive even the weariest travelers. Make the trip to immerse yourself in the sea’s healing waters, embark on a journey of historical discoveries, or simply relax by the shores of a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, disappearing lake.
