Victoria Falls

Located on the Zambezi River, which forms the border between those two Z countries (Zambia and Zimbabwe), Victoria falls is 360 feet high, and more than a mile wide. Traditionally Vic Falls is called ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, which translates to ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ by the local Kololo tribe. Victoria Falls is not actually a record breaker, but its combined height and width is considered by many to be greatest curtain of falling water in the world. During the rainy season, mist and spray from the falls can be seen from miles away, and as the falls thunder over the giant basalt cliff, they transform the peaceful Zambezi River into a savage beast.

In the middle of the falls is famous Livingstone Island, which is arguably the best place to experience the falls, and where Dr. David Livingstone viewed the falls for the first time in 1855. Tours are only available during the dry season from July to January, from the Zambian side. Another famous feature is the ‘Devil's Pool’, which is just west of Livingstone Island. Due to an eddy formed by the rocks, it is possible to wade at the edge of the falls in relative safety, but again only during the dry season when the danger of water carrying you over the edge is minimal.

Making it happen

You can visit Victoria Falls from either Zimbabwe or Zambia, and if you can afford the visas, it is quite nice to take in the view from both sides. There is a small airport in the town of Victoria Falls, with arrivals and departures from Johannesburg daily. Another option is the train from Bulawayo in Zimbabwe, an inexpensive overnight trip. Rental cars are available in Bulawayo and in Livingstone, on the Zambian side. If you do decide to rent a car, be aware of extra fees for bringing a vehicle across international borders.

The falls are a stunning sight to behold, especially during the rainy season. There are numerous vantage points on both sides, with fabulous photo opportunities. And when you have seen your fill, there are dozens of activities that await you, from walking tours, shopping, wildlife safaris, white-water rafting, and even bungee jumping.

Restaurants and lodging are plentiful in both Livingstone (Zambia) and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), including everything from budget hostels and fast food, to upscale restaurants and five-star hotels. You can easily walk to the falls from the town of Victoria Falls, which is about a mile away. The town of Livingstone, however, is 6 miles from the falls.

The breathtaking Victoria Falls and the surrounding landscapes, towns, and parks make this one of Africa’s most popular destinations.
