There are actually three immense cascades that are collectively known as Niagara Falls, and have been inspiring explorers, artists, poets, filmmakers, and visitors for centuries. The falls are part of the Niagara River, which drains into Lake Ontario, and are located on the border between New York and Ontario. Niagara Falls only plummets 165 feet, which isn’t what makes it impressive. Instead, Niagara Falls is known for its incredible girth and powerful flow rate, the strongest in North America.
Horseshoe Falls, has a distinctive shape that you won’t win any points for guessing, is the largest of the three cascades and is located on the Canadian side. The American Falls and Bridal Falls are smaller and located entirely within the boundaries of New York. The American side also offers the opportunity to take a ferry to the base of the falls.
You can view the falls from either side of the border, and there are benefits to each. The Canadian side is said to have the better view, but the American side sports an observation tower just 20 yards from the top of the falls. Wherever you decide to view the splendor of these majestic falls, its certain to be a sight you won’t soon forget.
