Fun Fact: Bats are the only mammal in the world that can fly.

While there are about 1,000 different species of Bat in the world, there is one that we really want you to go see. The Straw Coloured Fruit Bat. Specifically the ones within Zambia’s Kasanka National Park every November. They fly from across Africa, although nobody is sure from exactly how far away, to take advantage of the Masuku fruit bloom, and there are going to be A LOT of them. Estimates put the number of Bats between five and eight million, which makes for a truly staggering spectacle. Take into account the fact that Straw-Coloured Fruit Bats can have a 30” wingspan, and you’re in for an experience of a lifetime.

This is probably the most amazing wildlife experience you’ve never heard of. But now you have, so no excuses. Kasanka is an easy six hour drive from Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. And since you’ll be in the neighborhood, Zambia has plenty more to offer, so be sure to check out a traditional safari too. We, and lots of other people, recommend South Luangwa National Park.
