Elephants

Elephants are the largest terrestrial mammals in the world, and can live to be 70 years old. Male African Elephants can grow to 13’ tall and weigh over 15,000 pounds, while Asian and Forest Elephants are considerably smaller. They achieve these massive dimensions by eating literally hundreds of pounds of vegetation every single day.

Elephants live in matriarchal societies, with the oldest sow surrounded by her female offspring and immature male children. Once bull (male) Elephants come of age, they are banished from the herd, so as not to risk inbreeding. Bull males subsequently form bachelor herds that roam the savannah looking for trouble and available lady elephants. And vegetation. Ok, mostly vegetation. Bull Elephants do, however, go through periods of musth, which is a kind of testosterone induced rage that encourages them to become aggressive and seek out a mate with a certain sense of purpose.

Elephants are best seen on safari in Africa, where you would be hard pressed to miss them in most parks. Just be careful not to get too close, lest you get charged. Elephants are the only animals in Africa that you aren’t actually safe from in your vehicle. Ironically enough, Bull Elephants are unlikely to become aggressive. It’s the females that might come after you at a moments notice. Actually, wait, that isn’t so ironic after all.

Alternatively, in Southeast Asia Elephants have become a staple part of the tourist experience.
