Climb Sand Dunes

Sign up to track this →

When most people think of sand dunes, they imagine the Sahara Desert, but in fact, as long as certain conditions exist, dunes can be found anywhere. And they form some of the most dynamic and striking landscapes in the world. The only requirements are large quantities of sand, a lack of vegetation, and enough wind to blow the sand against obstacles. These conditions are best along the seashore or in a desert. Although the Sahara is the largest desert in the world, only about 15% of it is covered by sand dunes.

Dunes form a unique environment for wildlife and offer adventure seekers a myriad of thrilling experiences, from strenuous hiking and climbing, to sandboarding and sand sledding. Others come simply to take in the unique windswept ripples, ever-changing crests, and the exquisite dance of light and shadows across the sand.

Ready to embark on your own sand dune adventure? These are some of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring sand dunes in the world.

Sossusvlei, Namibia

One of the largest and most beautiful sand dunes in the world can be found in the southern Namib Desert. Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by massive dune formations in Namib-Naukluft National Park. Many of the dunes surrounding Sossusvlei are more than 650 feet high and are unique in their striking red, orange, and pink colorations. The closest international airport is located in the capital city of Windhoek. From here, you can either sign on with a tour company, or rent a car. It’s a 6 to 8 hour drive from the airport.

Death Valley, California

The lowest and hottest spot in North America is home to spectacular golden dunes of unparalleled beauty. Only 1% of Death Valley’s 3 million acre wilderness is covered by dunes, and there are several systems spread throughout the park. The Mesquite Flat dunes are the most popular for climbing, although it is not recommended during the summer months due to extreme temperatures. Sandboarding is an exhilarating way to experience the dunes, and is permitted everywhere except on the Eureka, Panamint, and Ibex dune systems. The closest airport is McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, which is a two hour drive from the park.

Médanos de Coro National Park, Venezuela

Spread over 95 square miles, these dunes are always changing due to the relentless winds, and the sand dunes can reach more than 130 feet tall in some places. Located near the city of Coro, this unique desert can be easily reached via taxi or public bus after flying into the city’s small airport. Recreation of all types is popular, including sandboarding, hiking, camel-rides, and driving off-road vehicles.

Sand dunes are unique natural features that create beautiful landscapes. They are quite an experience to discover, climb, and explore.
