Everest Base Camp

Famous for its dramatic mountain peaks and the devotion and warmth of the Sherpa people, the Everest region is a beloved destination for trekkers and adventure seekers. The Everest Base Camp is actually a name given to two separate camps on opposite sides of Mount Everest. Both treks offer unparalleled views of Everest with a few distinct differences. Although you can drive to the base camp in Tibet, the area itself sees fewer travelers since the permitting process is harder and more expensive in China, also food and lodging are not as easy to come by. The southern base camp in Nepal is a more populated hike with an abundance of eating and sleeping options. You will also have the chance to get to know the local Sherpas who will astound you with their friendliness.

The Nepal base camp (17,598’), on the south side of Everest, is used by climbers attempting the southeast ridge of Everest. This Everest Base Camp Trek is hiked by thousands of visitors each year and is one of the most popular treks in the Himalayas.

On the north side of Everest, the base camp is located in Tibet at 16,900 feet. Vehicles have access to the camp during the summer months, and mountain climbers usually rest here for several days to acclimate to the high elevation before attempting the northeast ridge.

Making it Happen

If you are trekking to the southern base camp in Nepal, you’ll have to get to the capital city of Kathmandu and then fly to the smaller town of Lukla to begin your 8-day hike. A guide and porter, while not required, will make your trek easier and more enjoyable. Guides speak English and are invaluable if you become lost or ill. Porters and guides can be hired in either Kathmandu or Lukla. Food and supplies are plentiful along the trail, and you will pass numerous small villages with cafes and lodges that cater to trekkers. Although good physical condition is important, you don’t have to be an athlete to make this hike. The combination of breathtaking beauty, captivating local culture, and an incredible sense of accomplishment, make this a trip you will always remember.

To reach Everest Base Camp in Tibet, you will first have to get permits from the Chinese Government arranged through travel companies in Lhasa. Tour packages will include these permits, along with a rental vehicle, driver, and guide. After flying into Lhasa, you will embark on a 312 mile drive through some of the most beautiful landscapes in all the world. When you reach Tingri, you have the option of continuing south into the Himalaya Natural Reserve and driving another 62 miles to the base camp, or you can begin your trek in Tingri. This 45 mile hike offers trekkers a moderate physical challenge in relative solitude with good opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Whichever route you choose to experience the Everest Region, you will be immersed in the unbelievable beauty, isolation, and adventure that can only be found in the shadow of the world’s highest mountain.
