Not many people consider flying one of their favorite activities, but more of a necessary evil. After all, swimming across the pond is considerably more arduous than it sounds. And while economy flights make flying affordable, they are only possible as a result of increased passenger capacity and decreased in-flight amenities, thereby making the most refreshing part of a typical plane ride the moment you get the hell off of it.
There are, however, a bunch of people on the plane who aren’t nearly as cranky and uncomfortable as you are, all those passengers who didn’t want to make eye-contact as you walked past their oversized seats. They have a higher luggage weight limit, more leg room, better food, lounge access, free alcohol, and seats that recline to nearly, if not completely horizontal in many cases. It’s no secret that flying first class has a myriad of benefits, but they come at a cost. There are some tips and tricks, however, that can help you land a premium seat, and it’s an experience everyone should have at least once.
How to make it Happen
Ready to be the envy of everyone in coach by making the leap to first class? Even savvy budget travelers can score a first class seat if they know how to play their cards right. First of all, it pays to pick an airline and stick with it. You are much more likely to be rewarded for your loyalty. Frequent flyer miles can be used to upgrade flights that you’ve already paid for. Ask for an upgrade at check-in for a considerable savings over full price. Many major credit cards partner with airlines to offer sign-on bonuses and miles that can also net you an upgrade to first class.
Even if you can’t fly first class on every single trip, it’s a great experience to have. Be warned though, once you’ve had a taste of first class, you may never want to go back to coach.
