Golf Majors

Golf is a game of patience, skill, and - for the amateur - a lot of luck. A great way of relying less on luck and more on skill is to watch the world’s elite golfers work their magic. Practice probably wouldn’t hurt either. The best way to see golf played at its highest level is to be a spectator at one of the four majors - the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship.

Each major has its own distinct qualities. The Masters is the only major played annually at the same course - the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. While the U.S. Open and PGA Championship have reputations for being played on very challenging courses, thereby forcing golfers to be extremely accurate. The British Open is either played in Scotland or England, and is the oldest professional golf tournament in existence.

In 2014, the champions of the four majors won a combined total of about $6.5 million. British Open and PGA winner, Rory McIlroy, took home $3.3 million of that himself. If H.S. Scrivener knew how profitable being good at golf could be, he likely would have picked up some clubs, and never penned the line “to play golf is to spoil an otherwise enjoyable walk.” Jack Nicklaus holds the record for major victories, with 18. While Tiger Woods is second with 14 victories. The majors are a fun experience where you can see the world’s elite golfers play the sport at an unparalleled level.
