Although the exact date is unknown, the first Full Moon Party occurred sometime in the late 1980’s; as a result of a group of backpacking tourists realizing that viewing the moon from the Thai island of Koh Phangan was an extraordinary experience.
The event occurs 12 times a year, on each full moon, and draws tens of thousands of global visitors. Held on the Haad Rin beach, the festivities begin with visitors painting glow in the dark art on their bodies. As the night progresses, the party gets more wild, until it turns into a dance free-for-all, where anything goes. And, although they are technically not Full Moon parties, the beach festivities on Christmas and New Year's Eve are often the largest and most widely attended of the year.
You can expect to dance to a wide variety of music, including techno, reggae, trance, and drum and bass. Entertainers, like fire-eaters and jugglers, will keep you amused as you drop your inhibitions and party until the break of dawn.
It is important to note that the dates for the Full Moon Party will sometimes vary from the lunar cycle in order to avoid coinciding with Buddhist holidays that fall on full moons. So, we recommend that you confirm the 'party' dates before booking your trip.
