Drawing millions of visitors each year, Brazil’s Carnaval has been running since 1870 and is simultaneously celebrated across the nation. The most popular and grandest Carnaval, however, takes place in the thriving metropolis of Rio de Janeiro.

Plan on attending? Well then, you better get your costume! Because you’ll be expected to be fully adorned in a wild costume before joining in the hottest celebration on the globe. Filled with special events, the Carnaval is a non-stop party. One of the most popular events is the Sambadrome, where samba schools from across the country compete for the coveted title of Champion. In addition to the Sambadrome, festival-goers can attend everything from carnival balls to street parties to parades.

The 2015 Rio de Janeiro Carnival will be held February 13 through February 17.
