Day of the Dead

Fusing traditional rituals with Catholic beliefs, the Dia de los Muertos is a holiday that celebrates life, by remembering those that have passed away. Although originally a Mexican holiday, it's now celebrated throughout Latin America, the United States, Europe, Oceania, and Asia.

In Mexico, people will go to cemeteries and erect private altars containing memorabilia, photographs, food, and beverages – all of which held significance to the life of the person buried there. The holiday occurs on October 31 through November 2; coinciding with the holidays of All Hallows Eve (Halloween) and All Souls Day. In many cultures, November 1 is the day to remember deceased children, whereas November 2 is the day to remember deceased adults.

If you witness a Day of the Dead celebration, you will undoubtedly see some calavera, which are oftentimes colorful representations of a human skull made from either sugar or clay. Many people create sugarskull candles, toys, and even candy. Some even go as far as painting their face in the sugarskull form.

Day of the Dead traditions vary from region to region, and, of course, from country to country. For example, in Guatemala, a very important aspect of the Day of the Dead is the building and flying of extremely large kites.
