To paraphrase Shakespeare “A tulip, by any other name, would be just as beautiful if you found yourself walking amongst a field full of them” Ok, so maybe Bill had a better way with words, but our point stands. Tulips are good looking flowers, and few spring festivals are more beautiful than the ones dedicated to them.
Held most notably in North America and Holland, the Tulip Festival is a celebration of spring and, for North Americans, a way to honor Dutch immigrants.
In Holland, which is a region of the Netherlands, the Tulip Festival is an extremely large affair. Although the event is held in many places, the largest festival is in the town of Noordoostpolder. A special route is designated for tourists to view the tulips, which can be viewed by foot, bike, horse carriage, or covered wagon. In addition to viewing the tulips, there are culinary and cultural attractions set up at various locations throughout the area.
The Canadian tulip festival, held in Ottawa, dates back to when the Dutch Royal Family took refuge in there during WWII. And every year, since 1943, the Dutch Royal Family has sent tulip bulbs to the festival.
