Get ready to head to the beautiful Mediterranean region of Valencia, Spain for a week of music, food, and dancing. And tomato throwing!
La Tomatina is held on the last Wednesday of August in the town of Buñol, Valencia. And although the week is filled with parades, fireworks, and parties, La Tomatina is the real reason you’re there.
On the morning of the ‘tomato fight’, trucks dump over 100 metric tons of overripe (read: soft) tomatoes into the Plaza del Pueblo, the town center of Buñol. And once the town officials fire the water cannons, the madness commences, with everyone relentlessly pelting each other with squishy tomatoes. With the firing of the second round of water cannons, the tomato fight will end, exactly one hour after it began. And once it’s over, it’s over. So drop that last tomato. We said drop it! Once the cleaning process is underway, there is no need to fret. Head over to the La Tomatina after-party for food, music, and fun.
The local authorities have limited La Tomatina to only 20,000 people after reaching an unmanageable attendance of 50,000 in 2012. Meaning you will not be able to participate in La Tomatina without a ticket, so plan ahead by purchasing one. And pair of safety goggles.
