Superbowl

Although not officially a holiday, Super Bowl Sunday has become as much an American tradition as Thanksgiving dinner or the 4th of July. From its beginning in 1967, the Super Bowl is a true clash of the titans. What truly makes it unique though, is the way it has become about much more than just the athletes and competition. Top entertainers perform during the halftime show, and advertisers spend huge money for coveted 30-second spots, which will cost four million dollars in 2015! Although, with over 111 million viewers in 2014, the Super Bowl was the most watched US telecast of all time.

Those fortunate enough to attend a Super Bowl in person will, unfortunately, not get to see the commercials themselves, but will be treated to an all or nothing match between the top teams of the NFL’s two divisions. All of the other popular sports in the USA (baseball, basketball, and hockey) have finals that are determined after a series of matches, which lessens the pressure and significance of each game. For football, there is only one chance though, so everyone on the field knows that it’s do or die. There are lots of activities to attend during the days leading up the Super Bowl, including fashion and food shows, concerts, and many other events sponsored by the NFL and the city hosting the game.

The winner of the Super Bowl is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which is made from sterling silver by Tiffany & Co. The NFL also pays for up to 150 rings ($5,000 per ring) for the winning team. Even the losing team receives up to 150 pieces of jewelry paid for by the NFL.
